On the 8th of December, the organization Phonetic Spit involved many high school poetry clubs in Unity Day, including Red Mountain’s. Unity day is an event designed to bring together the many creative minds of Mesa Public Schools. It is the first of many, and a requirement for competing in the Phonetic Spit poetry slam competition later in 2019. Red Mountain junior Katie Martin and sophomore Monique Diaz attended a identity workshop, in which students wrote poetry about the most important parts of themselves. Later that night, there was an open mic in which many students, including Martin and Diaz, participated.
