The Red Mountain Wrestling Team is determined to strive for victory and win state no matter who stands in their way. Varsity and J.V. players had their first match at Shadow Mountain High School against the Verrado Vipers at 4 p.m. on Nov. 21. Soon after, the freshman team had their first match on Nov. 25 at Dobson High School.
“It’s an honor to be on the team again,” junior and J.V. player Duy Pham said. “I’ve trained for countless days to qualify for Red Mountain’s team. This year is my second year on the wrestling team, I feel like our team is a force to be reckoned with.”
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the world dating back to 2600 B.C. Karantinos is the team’s new head coach taking over for Coach Hare. Coach Karantinos is determined to make Red Mountain’s wrestlers the best team out there. He has been a wrestling coach for 18 years at Red Mountain and his record last year was 21-6. Currently their record is 17-5, which gives the team more motivation to push forward and win. He has also been inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for 2017.
“We are largely young and unproven. However, there is a very high level of energy and commitment to carry on the successful tradition of Red Mountain as well as having key senior leadership setting the tone,” Karantinos said. “We concern ourselves with building strong character principles. Our goal is to get as many to the State Tournament as possible. Overall, this group is working hard and improving as we go. The more we have in the big show, the greater our chances.”
Wrestlers are looking forward to the competition that lies ahead. The athletes are more determined than ever to have a flawless season. As the matches approach, the practice and intensity of the team increases as they now train twice as hard as previous days.
“I am looking forward to facing Corona del Sol and Mountain View,” junior and J.V. player Logan Pobliego said. “Our team goal for this season is to qualify for the state tournament. We are going to give it our all.”
The wrestlers are looking to have a fantastic season and outshine their competitors. For information regarding wrestling, go to http://www.mpsaz.org/rmhs/athletics/programs/wrestling.
