“I would like to cage dive with sharks because I’m scared of sharks. And I would like to swim with pigs in the Bahamas because they have wild pigs that just wild out and swim with you. I would like to go on a hot air balloon ride, I would like to be in the audience of Family Feud because that’s my favorite show, and I would like to become a yoga instructor.”

The class of 2017 has reached its last semester of high school. Soon they will enter a new era of their life, but in these last few months some seniors are still rushing to complete their goals before time runs out. It’s not only the middle-aged who write bucket lists—before this strange, brief time in their life has finished, Red Mountain’s seniors want to make sure they’ve made the most of their time in high school.
“[Before senior year ends] I’d like to get a job, decide on a major and enhance my social life,” senior Jacob Payne said. “I feel like if I complete all those then I’ll be a lot more prepared for college.”
Over the course of high school, the priorities of seniors have changed.
“This year I’ve focused more on just enjoying my time and not stressing about school as much,” senior Kaitlyn Misch said. “I feel like my freshman year I thought, ‘Oh this is the most important four years of my life,’ and now that it’s my last semester as a senior, it’s more so: ‘Enjoy the time I have and cherish it,’ rather than rush through it and get everything done.”
Some priorities have changed only slightly, others entirely.
“I started wanting to get really good grades, and then, maybe like the second day of freshman year, I realized that’s not going to happen,” senior Priscilla Fernandez said. “So, my expectations of myself became realistic.”
As the number of days till school ends drops into single digits, seniors have begun to focus less on deadlines and more on fun.
“I would like to go to senior ditch day because I have never ditched anything in school,” senior Kora Kostiew said. “I’m a really good student, and my friends are like dragging me out of school, so I have to do that and not be stressed about it.”
Many think it’s important to relax and destress as the final days approach.
“I frequently cuddle with my cockatoo,” Fernandez said. “I have a pet cockatoo named Nicki that I play with, and I like to take baths with bath bombs.”
And maybe once the year is done, it will be time to fulfill some long set-aside dreams.
“I really want to play volleyball. I like volleyball,” Payne said. “I’ve always wanted to play it, but I don’t have time.”
Perhaps they will even check off some items from their life-long bucket list.
“I would like to cage dive with sharks because I’m scared of sharks,” Fernandez said. “And I would like to swim with pigs in the Bahamas because they have wild pigs that just wild out and swim with you. I would like to go on a hot air balloon ride, I would like to be in the audience of Family Feud because that’s my favorite show, and I would like to become a yoga instructor.”
