Red Mountain’s track and field team is back for another season, stronger than before and ready to compete.
“[Athletes] have been preparing for the season in the fall by either doing cross-country, working on their distance running or lifting and conditioning,” Head Track Coach Krieg said. “They have been doing base work in the fall, so in the start of the season they are ready to train for speed, speed endurance, distance, hurdles, and strength and technique for throws.”
For the athletes, improving does not stop at the track. They continue to push themselves further by attending regular weight training sessions and doing their own conditioning outside of practices.
“Weight training has definitely made me stronger,” shot put and discus athlete Raquel Dominguez said. “Since the season has started, I have noticed my throws have improved.”
With that in mind, the team is confident in every level: varsity, junior varsity and freshman. The coaches are satisfied with the group of athletes they have this year and believe this season will be their strongest yet.
“[My goal for the team] is to have as many kids qualify for the state tournament in May,” Coach Krieg said. “Also, I’d like to have a great showing when we travel to California to attend a couple meets there.”
