The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons went neck and neck for the victory of Super Bowl 51 on Sunday, Feb. 5. The Super Bowl went into an overtime game for the first time in Super Bowl history. In a historical overtime feat, the Patriots beat the Falcons 34-28.
“New England Patriots deserved to win the Super Bowl,” junior Leonardo Mendoza said. “They had a rough past, some may say they do not deserve the win because of the incident that occurred last year. But in Sunday’s game, there were no questionable calls or anything to make the opposing team’s fans upset.”
The AFC champions came to the Super Bowl with their heads high and an outstanding record of 17-2. After a rough first half, people started to doubt their team’s record, but the Patriots still came out on top.
“The Super Bowl was a roller coaster of emotions. I feel the Patriots deserved the win because they brought it together and played as a team,” junior Derek Larson said. “The Falcons got tired, and the Patriots outlasted them and played better than Atlanta in the last two quarters.”
Even though the Falcons lost, they still made it to the Super Bowl with a record of 13-6 and deserve recognition for how far they got in the NFL season.
“The Falcons put up a very good game during the first half of the Super Bowl,” sophomore Christian Trujillo said. “They had a really good offense and defense with a couple interceptions. I believe everyone thought that the Falcons were going to take the win before the second half, until Tom Brady talked to his team to get their head in the game.”
In both previous playoff games, it was obvious early on that Atlanta and New England would make the Super Bowl.
“The previous playoff games were disappointing,” freshman Rhiannon Dyer said. “They were all blowouts. Personally the games were boring to watch because I already knew who was going to win and participate in the Super Bowl.”
The Super Bowl was a historical and exciting game, both teams came out playing to the best of their abilities. For more information about the Super Bowl and the results visit https://www.nfl.com/super-bowl.
