The beginning of 2017 marks the start of awards season. These awards shows celebrate the best in a variety of entertainment industries such as music, television and film.
The Golden Globes was hosted on Jan. 9 by Jimmy Fallon, host of “The Tonight Show.” The Golden Globes celebrated achievements in television and film. Some of the awards included “Best Animated Film” won by ‘Zootopia’ and “Best Motion Picture” won by ‘Moonlight.’ Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won the awards for the best actor and actress in a musical for their lead in the film ‘La La Land,’ which swept every category it was nominated in and came out with a record-breaking seven awards.
“My favorite award show to watch is the Golden Globes,” sophomore Tyra Lamoureux said. “I love watching TV and movies, and the Golden Globes cover both of them.”
Some awards shows allow the audience to vote for who they want to win, such as the People’s Choice Awards, which took place on Jan. 18, hosted by actor and comedian Joel McHale. Some of the most popular awards include: “Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress” won by Blake Lively and “Favorite Dramatic Movie” won by the movie ‘Me Before You.’
“I like the People’s Choice Awards because the people get to choose and express who they think is the best rather than the press and magazines,” sophomore Caroline Smith said.
The Screen Actors Guild was held on Jan. 29 at the Shrine Auditorium. The SAG awards recognize outstanding performances in television and motion picture. Some of the favorite wins include the cast of the Netflix original series “Stranger Things” winning the “Best Drama Series” and the cast of motion picture “Hidden Figures” which won “Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture.”
The Oscar Academy Awards took place on Feb. 26, at Dolby Theater, hosted by television personality Jimmy Kimmel. The Oscars celebrate the artists who bring magic to the big screen. Some of the nominees include “La La Land” and “Hidden Figures” for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Ryan Gosling and Andrew Garfield are nominated for the Academy Award Best Actor and Emma Stone and Ruth Negga for the Academy Award Best Actress.
From the diverse fashion choices to the music performances, award show season is a crowd favorite around the world. The variety of entertainment industries being celebrated cover everything from directors’ awards to singing to TV and film and allow artists of all types to be recognized for their work.
